Dr. E. T. Dumble (1852-1927) served as state geologist of Texas from 1888 to 1896, supervising one of the early mineralogical surveys of the region. From 1897 until his retirement in 1925, he also acted as organizer and manager of the Southern Pacific Oil Companies. William Kennedy was a self-taught geologist who worked in the early development of the Texas oil industry. Kennedy was born in Scotland. He attended the University of Edinburgh for some period of time but did not receive a degree. While working in Nova Scotia as a banker he began a self-education in geology and published his first academic paper in 1884.
